The film is a biopic about stand-up comedian and blaxploitation leading man Rudy Ray Moore, an Arkansas native who, after several failed attempts at becoming famous, finally succeeded by combining the rhythms of traditional African American storytelling with the sexually Dolemite Is My Name was snubbed completely despite the fact Murphy, Snipes, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (perfect as Lady Reed) gave three of the best performances last year. The film didn’t even show up in the costume category, which it should have been a shoe-in for at the very least. And if “Dolemite Is My Name” seems content to stay on the surface of things and just give people a good time, perhaps that’s a testament to how seamlessly it weaves in a greater resonance.
